So long, Captain

It's kind of strange to say that Don Van Vliet has died, since he seemed
to have gone a long time ago. He had been largely silent for the
last three decades, painting in the desert. His art looks like his music
sounded, simultaneously complex and primitive. He will be missed for
much longer than he's been away.

  1. Actually Beefheart's Ahht may be a bit too complex and...tragic for 'Merican consumers, H. They might get Zappa's comedy or porn (tho not his serious stuff) but CB's generally too weird for Consumerland (tho his death probably good for business). Like the usual C & L's ho's and Joan Rivers' wannabes, and rabblerousers: they'll never get Don VV's vision, man--sort of like they never read Pynchon, or beat writers, or much of anything.
