In spite of being the most highly anticipated event in motion picture history, the Michael Jackson rockumentary 'This Is It' managed to pull in only 21 million dollars domestically on it's opening weekend, much less than the 400 million Sony Pictures had anticipated. Screened at nearly 3500 theaters, 'This Is It' was the third highest grossing concert film of the year, falling far behind 'Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds' and front-runner 'Paul Blart, Mall Cop'. "Sure, sure, you can make that sort of comparison if you want to," said Sony Distribution chief Rory Bruer, "But let me ask you this - How well did 'Paul Blart' do in Japan? Really? That much, huh. How about South Africa? Get outta here." In spit of the disappointing revenue, 'This Is It' did become the highest grossing concert film ever to be composed entirely of rehearsal footage not intended to be seen by an audience, a record expected to be eclipsed during Thanksgiving weekend when 'Paul Blart: The Security Camera Tapes' is released. |
