Obama set to nominate Churchill for Supremes

Reuters is reporting that President Obama is set to announce plans to nominate Ward LeRoy Churchill to replace retiring Justice David Souter on the United States Supreme Court. The choice of a widely known professor and author surprised Republicans who expected Obama to nominate a Hispanic or another black or another woman or another homosexual or some ungodly combination multi-quota candidate.

"If these reports are true, it represents a truly bold and cunning choice by President Obama," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. "I don't see how the GOP could stop his nomination without being seen as obstructionist. Churchill has already been pretty thoroughly vetted, so it's unlikely we'll find any new revelations in his background. And the name speaks for itself. The American people would be up in arms if we tried to block a Churchill from the high court."

"It's a dilemma," agrees Senator Jeff Sessions, who is expected to replace Arlen Specter as the lead Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee. "We were prepared to block any sort of quota oriented move like a Hispanic or another black or another woman or another homosexual or some ungodly combination multi-quota candidate, but this is a straight white guy and a Vietnam vet to boot. Sure, he's a little liberal, but then he's replacing a liberal, so I guess it's no big woof. Frankly, Obama's shrewdness has got me stymied. I think we may have to go ahead and confirm the guy and save our fights for what are sure to be more controversial nominations in the future."
