The long strange trip of Paul Revere

"And I just got a chance, an opportunity, to see the birthplace of Paul Revere, the birthplace of his famous ride, and it sent a chill up my spine, cause Paul Revere is the founding father who in fact created the early warning system, which, you know, was responsible for us to being able to wipe the British off the face of the United States, as we planned to call it later."

"He who warned, uh, the British that they weren’t going to be taking away our arms uh by ringing those bells and making sure as he’s riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were going to be secure and we were going to be free and we were going to be armed."

"Now, uh, a lot of people, especially the young people, think that he was trying to warn the colonialists, and that, I guess that's kind of correct as far as it goes, but he was trying to warn the British that we had big guns and big bells and those bells were ringing and it must have made an awful din and then a few months later we whipped the British and now they're the English."

"Then a little later, after we won that war, Paul Revere, he uh, he wasn't content to rest on his laurels, and he teamed up with Dick Clark on an early version of television, and he had a lot of hit records like 'Kicks' and 'Indian Reservation', you can still hear them on the radio to this very day, at least in Wasilla."

The Young Guns

"That's all you got? That's all you got? Pretty wimpy handshake you got there, fella. Not much of tough guy, are you? I'm a tough guy, yeah, yeah I am. I grew up on the streets of Richmond where you gotta be tough if you're a Jew. I take no quarter, and I can take you, whether it's on the b-ball court or the court of public opinion. Mano a mano? You bet I'll go mano a mano, and when the smoke clears... Oh, hi John. I was just rehearsing for my 'Young Guns' book tour... Thank you, Earl, you can take off the mask now. Good workout."

"Right, right, that's uh... Actually, that's what I was dropping by to talk to you about. I was reading your book just last night..."

"What? 'Young Guns'? You were reading 'Young Guns' last night? You can't do that, Boehner. I'll have you up in front of the ethics committee. 'Young guns' doesn't even come out for another two weeks."

"It's okay, Eric, I called the promo department at Simon and Schuster and they sent me over a copy..."

"Why? You gonna review it? The only advance copies they're supposed to be sending out are review copies."

"Well, I think they sent it out of courtesy, out of deference to my position as House Minority Leader..."

"For the moment."

"Huh? Oh, sure, for the moment. And then after November I'll be Speaker of the House and..."

"If no one challenges you."

"That's, uh, that's technically true, but I don't know of anybody that plans to challenge me, do you? If you hear anything on that, I sure would appreciate a heads up. Anyway, about the book..."

"Brilliant, isn't it?"

"It's, uh, it's very well done, Eric, but you know, I couldn't help but notice that my name only came up three times in the book..."

"So?"

"So, I appreciate the mentions, but they are rather slight, don't you think? 'Boehner was at the meeting with me', 'Boehner appointed me to run the Platform Committee', 'Boehner was also at the White House briefing'. As I said, rather slight."

"That's three more mentions than Mike Pence got."

"True, but I might point out that Mike Pence is only a Conference Chairman, while I'm the Minority Leader."

"For the moment."

"Yes, yes, you said that before, and believe me, I am well aware of the awesome responsibility that awaits me as Speaker. I'm just saying that your book hardly captures the breadth and depth of my experience in the House."

"Nor was it intended to. Let me make something clear, Boehner. This book is about the new faces in the House, the movers and shakers, the young guns, if you will. And. You. Are. Not. A. Young. Gun."

"Granted, I'm a bit older than you. Fourteen years, as a matter of fact, and I'd like to think..."

"Fourteen years is a loooong time in politics, old man."

"That's, uh, pretty cold, considering that I've basically been your mentor, and all..."

"Uh huh, uh huh. Well, I guess you did a pretty damn good job of it, gramps. Anything else?"

"No, I... guess not... Oh. I did want to point out one thing, though... Right here... I guess these are the publishers notes, it starts out 'These Young Guns of the House GOP--Cantor (the leader)'..."

"Go on."

"That's all, I just wanted to point out the mistake. I'm just saying that I'm the Minority Leader and you're the Whip."

"For the moment."

in other primary news...

Much to the disappointment of the entire FGAQ family, Orlty
Taitz has failed in her bid to become Secretary of State for
California. And she was beaten by a black man. Not physically
beaten, mind you, but for Orly mere fists could not have been
more painful than the three to one trouncing that she suffered.
And to think - not only was she beaten by a black man, but she
was beaten by a black man who was never even nominated and
once registered as a Democrat in Florida...

Dennis lives

Artist Dennis Hopper had been around forever without ever developing the slightest taint of nostalgia so it's not illogical to believe that he'll live on in digital form far into the future.

Here he is as the sinister and mysterious Frank in David Lynch's 'Blue Velvet'

your stupid tax dollars at work

Cake? You can't eat the fucking cake! We're talking Bizzaro World Marie Antoinette here. Like the ridiculous pardoning of the oven-ready turkeys, here is another grotesque White House tradition that we had so hoped Obama would have throttled with glee. But now, following the enlightenment, we've got marzipan replicas of eggplants grown in the Example Garden, complete with a miniature pseudo-edible Bo

Same as it ever was, except that this time it's white chocolate, motherfucker, 250 pounds of it, and it's got honey from the White House bee hive, and really, really, the best commentary I can make is to reprint the following piece from the Christmas of 2006.

Let them eat an enormous fucking cake.

According to the Chief Executive's web site, the above monstrosity of dark chocolate and gingerbread weighs in at over three hundred pounds of sugary goodness and took more than three weeks to make, meaning it was already stale before anyone was able to get as much as a bite out of the Lincoln bedroom. Which, I suppose, makes the Bush White House more of a metaphor than an after dinner treat.

It's as though spring was never waiting for us, girl, it ran one step ahead as we followed in the dance, and then we abruptly changed to an even better metaphor (albeit one without a subject) about laundry where we noted that between the parted pages we were pressed by love's hot, fevered iron, like a strip-ed pair of pants. That's strip-ed, not striped, because striped pairs of pants are only worn by the lower classes, or buffoons, or girls with really big asses who don't seem to realize that this sort of fashion decision only aggravates their problems.

So ultimately, the fudge White House is melting in the dark, all the sweet, brown icing flowing down. Someone left the cake out in the rain and I don't think that I can take it, cause it took so long to bake it and I'll never have that recipe again.

Oh, no! Oh, no! No, no, oh no!!

Sonofabitch was never meant to be eaten.

The Tom Coburn Death Wish Watch

Okay, just to set this up in case you missed it during the blur of Zappadan, but on Sunday afternoon Senator Tom Coburn took to the floor to suggest a special health care appeal to the Deity - "What the American people ought to pray is that somebody can’t make the vote tonight. That’s what they ought to pray." Not surprisingly, this was taken as a desire by Coburn to see ailing 92 year old Robert Byrd shuffle off this mortal coil, and a call for fellow wingnuts to compound their power of prayer in order to help Byrd on his way.

Cut to yesterday on C-SPAN, with far-right Senator John Barrasso (The Clean Water Act is a federal power grab!) taking calls... The caller is brilliant, brief and pitch perfect, but it's the vacant, million mile stare of Barrasso that's the star of this video.
